Medical Colleges:
MBBS: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, or in Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae (abbreviated in various ways, viz. MBBS or MBChB, MB BS, MB BChir (Cantab), BM BCh (Oxon), MB BCh, MB ChB, BM BS, BM, BMed etc.), are the two first professional undergraduate degrees awarded upon graduation from medical school in medicine and surgery by universities in various countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The naming suggests that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and awarded together. In countries that follow the tradition of the United States, the degree is awarded as M.D., which is a professional doctorate degree.

Bihar is set to get 410 more undergraduate medical seats this year, as compared to 2012, including 100 seats each in new medical colleges at Bettiah and Pawapuri.
As such, 950 MBBS seats may be up for
grabs in Bihar this year, as compared to 540 seats last year. This has become
possible after consent from the regulator, the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The MCI has granted one-time
permission for enhancement of annual intake capacity in undergraduate courses
at government medical colleges across the country for the academic session
2013-14.
As per an MCI notification, existing
government medical colleges, which enjoy minimum 10 years of standing from the
date of grant of initial letter of permission by the Central government, were
eligible for the benefit.
The notification said those having an
annual intake of 50 seats or more but below 100 MBBS seats were eligible to
apply for enhancement of annual intake capacity to 100.
Medical institutions with an annual
intake of 100 or more but below 150 MBBS seats were eligible to apply for
enhancement of annual intake capacity to 150.
This, the MCI had made it clear, was
a “one-time measure” and would be subject to MCI inspection from the following
year.
In keeping with the conditions laid
down in this notification, five of the seven existing medical colleges of Bihar
applied for enhancement of MBBS seats.
While the Patna Medical College
Hospital (PMCH) applied for increasing its medicos’ intake from 100 to 150, the
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital (Bhagalpur), Anugrah Narayan Magadh
Medical College (Gaya) and the Sri Krishna Medical College (Muzaffarpur) moved
for seat enhancement from 50 to 100 each.
The Darbhanga Medical College
Hospital (DMCH) applied for increasing intake from 90 to 100. The MCI nod
covered 100 seats each for new medical institutions at Bettiah and Pawapuri.
Confirming the developments,
additional secretary, health, RP Ojha said, “We are awaiting letter of
permission (LoP), which should come from the MCI any day now”.
The MCI board of governors, he said,
was scheduled to meet on Wednesday (July 31). “Unless there is any technical
flaw in our application, there is no reason why the intake capacity is not
enhanced. However, unless we get the LoP, we will not be able to take
admissions on the increased quota”, he explained.

The quality and the standard of the medical institutes are looked after by Medical Council of India. The body has presently recognized 273 Indian medical schools which has the total capacity to educate 31298 students.
Students who have passed the 10+2 examination or any other equivalent examination with science background are entitled to apply for the admission into medical colleges in India. Candidates are selected on the basis of entrance tests, at state or national level. Candidates with relevant bachelor's degree can also go for medical postgraduate programs.
